Eagle Lake - A Trout Fishing Paradise
Eagle Lake is above all, a fisherman's lake, but it also is favored by those who love boating, water skiing, camping, and all sorts of outdoor recreation. Located 16 miles north of Susanville in northeastern California, Eagle Lake is the second largest natural lake completely within the state borders (Clear Lake is the largest).
Eagle Lake Water Level
Because Eagle Lake is located in a basin with no natural outlets, it has a higher alkaline level than most fresh water lakes. Falling water levels over the past several years have brought Eagle Lake down to record lows, concerning many. Still, those who love the unparalleled fishing for the lake's renowned Eagle Lake Trout return year after year for a great season of sport.
Fishing
Fishing at Eagle Lake is an annual tradition for avid anglers. The Eagle Lake Trout is a unique species that has adapted itself to the high alkaline level of the lake. Other fish such as the Tahoe sucker and the Lahontan red-side are found in the lake, but it is the large, feisty Eagle Lake Trout that are most sought after.
Boating
Eagle Lake is popular with boaters who enjoy cruising its varied shoreline. A number of small marinas are scattered around the lake, providing easy access for boat launching when the water levels are high enough. Some of the marinas provide slips for rent, boat rentals, gas, and other needed supplies. Several free launch ramps are available.
Cabins, RV Parks, Camping
Eagle Lake campgrounds are scattered around the lake's southern end. Cabins for rent can be found through local rental agencies. Many of the resorts at Eagle Lake offer RV and Tent Camping and cabins. There is very little else in the way of traditional lodging to be found at Eagle Lake.
Communities
Spalding is the largest community right on the lake, offering basic services including a store and gas station, launch ramp and an airport. On the east side of the lake, Eagles Nest is mainly a summer home community as is Bucks Bay. In Susanville, only 15 miles from Eagle Lake, you will find a host of stores, restaurants, motels and all the other amenities of a county seat.
Other Recreation
Lassen County offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, wildlife watching and horseback riding. Eagle Lake has several fine beaches for swimming. An amphitheater in the Eagle Lake Recreation Area offers slide shows and campfire programs. Diamond Mountain Golf Club is located just outside of Susanville. Close enough for a day trip, Lassen National Park is only 85 miles from Eagle Lake.
