Fishing at Shaver Lake
Anglers will find good fishing for smallmouth bass, brown and rainbow trout, and Kokanee salmon at Shaver Lake. Fishing is good for all kinds of fish in the spring and fall. During the summer most fishermen concentrate on rainbow trout and Kokanee salmon.
Since the 2011 draw down of Shaver Lake for dam maintenance, the Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project, the Department of Fish and Game, and others have worked hard to restore the fish populations. Spectacular catches since then attest to the success of their efforts. See more below.
Where to Fish on Shaver Lake
Bass are often found lurking around rocky points, although most of the bass caught are generally small. Around the dam is a popular spot for anyone after Kokanee. Trollers do well working the area from Boy Scout Cove over to Black Rock.
Good places to seek out rainbow trout are around any of the creek inlets and in the coves near Camp Edison. As cool weather sets in fishing from the shore for trout is more productive than from boats. Among the good spots are The Point and around Dorabelle Cove.

Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project
In order to install a geomembrane liner to the face of the dam, Southern California Edison drew down the water level in Shaver Lake in 2011. Most of the fish were relocated or lost.
Since then, the Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project and others have been working to restore the fish populations. During 2012 Fish and Game released 70-80,000 fingerling trout and 80,000 kokanee salmon into the lake. The Trophy Trout Project added another 40,000, with about 2,500 at trophy size. In 2012 a 15-pound trout was landed, evidence that Shaver Lake has returned to its status as one of the best fishing lakes in California.
