Huntington Lake Sailing

Steady afternoon winds make Huntington Lake a popular destination for sailors. Because of the lake's east-west orientation and the low opening on the western end, westerly winds generally pick up about mid-morning in the summer and continue until late afternoon. The strongest gusts are usually encountered at the east end of the lake.

The Fresno Yacht Club

The Fresno Yacht Club's main sailing venues are Huntington Lake and Millerton Lake. Races are held at Huntington Lake during the summer. Every year they hold their High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake, with both centerboard and keel boat classes. The Fresno Yacht Club is open to new members. Fresno Yacht Club

WW II B-24 Liberator Bomber
Sleeps in Huntington's Depths

In December 1943 a B-24 Liberator took off from Hammer Field in Fresno in search of a downed aircraft somewhere in the Sierra. Forty minutes into the flight the Liberator developed engine trouble and began to lose altitude.

Captain William Darden ordered his crew to bail out, but only two managed to make it out before the aircraft crashed into Huntington Lake.

Legend has it that the captain mistook the frozen lake for a meadow and tried to land, but one of the survivors disputes that claim. He says the lake was not frozen over.

The plane sank into the lake in more than a hundred feet of water. The 6 remaining crew members died in the crash. Although some parts of the plane - and the bodies of the dead crewmen - have been recovered, the remainder of the bomber rests on the bottom of the lake.

Learn more about it at the
Billy Creek Guard Station Museum near the Billy Creek Campgrounds.
