Big Bear Lake is managed by the Big Bear Municipal Water District. A Boat Permit is required for all vessels launched into the lake. (See Boat Permit information below.) Boat Permits

A Boat Permit must be displayed on all vessels launched into the lake. Permits may be purchased at most marinas, the public launch ramps and the Municipal Water District Office at 40524 Lakeview Drive, Big Bear Lake.

Quagga Mussel inspections are also required.

Boating Regulations

  • Maximum boat length is 26 feet.
  • Manually propelled boats less that 12 feet and float-tubes must operate between the 5 MPH buoys and shore.
  • Lake Speed Limit is 35 MPH, 10 MPH from sunset to 7:00 AM.
  • Personal Watercraft may only be operated between 7:00 AM and sunset.
  • Personal Watercraft must maintain a 100 foot distance from all other boats while operating at wakeless speeds
  • There is a 3 MPH Speed Limit in Papoose Bay, Canvassback Cove, and Mallard Lagoon.
