Lake Sonoma Camping

Lake Sonoma has one traditional, drive-in campground (Liberty Glen Campground) along with a large number of primitive campgrounds intended as boat-in, hike-in, or equestrian sites. Some sites located away from the shoreline are designated for hike-in or equestrian sites, but the majority are open to all modes of access. Located close to the water's edge, they most often are used by boaters.

Liberty Glen Campground

Location: Madrone Point Road off Rockpile Road

Notes: "Beginning Monday, June 2, 2014 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will operate Liberty Glen drive-in campground at Lake Sonoma on a "reservations only" basis. All reservations must be made at least three days in advance thru the Recreation.gov website or over the telephone by calling 1-877-444-6777. For security reasons, the campground gates will remain locked with the combination only being issued to registered campers through the reservation service. Park attendants will staff the campground allowing visitors to examine the facilities as staffing allows."

Boat-in/Hike-in Campgrounds

Lake Sonoma Primitive Campsites

109 primitive campsites are located in clusters around the lakes' shoreline. Access is by trail or boat only. Restrooms are chemical toilets. Potable water is not available. Each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern holder. Campers with reservations no longer must check in at the visitor center before going to your campsite. Be sure to write your reservation number and place it on the dashboard of your vehicle to avoid being charged a $5 entrance fee. Campers using the Yorty Creek Recreation Area must obtain a visitor pass and security combination from the Visitor Center.

Many campsites are situation close to the lake, while others are farther up from shore. Two of the sites - Island View and Broken Bridge are group sites.

There is a 2-day minimum stay for all boat-in and hike-in sites on weekends only during the peak season. There is a 3-day minimum stay for all boat-in and hike-in sites on holiday weekends only. Note: Due to low water levels, some campgrounds may be closed. Check the reservations link below for up-to-date information.

Falcons Nest Campground

Location: Dry Creek Arm
Number of Campsites: 7
Campground: All campsites are within 150 feet of the shore and have some shade. Sites 5 and 7 are close together, as are sites 3 and 4. View Pritchett Peaks from the campground. Close to water skiing zone.

Campground: Densely wooded campground with a steep shoreline. Excellent shade. Located along a No Ski zone. Popular with anglers.

Loggers Campground

Location: Dry Creek Arm
Number of Campsites: 10
Campground: All sites within 150 feet of shore. Sites 1, 2, 5, and 10 are closest to the water. Site 6 is situated on a peninsula. Sites 3 and 4 have shade and privacy. Site 7 has full sun. Some sites in the meadow with wide views.

Rustlers Campground

Location: Dry Creek Arm near Yorty Creek
Number of Campsites: 8
Campground: Sites are on a steep hillside, close to Yorty Creek Recreation Area. Sites 1 and 2 are close together, while sites 4 and 5 have steep shorelines and partial shade. Popular with canoeists and kayakers since it is in a no-wake zone.

Skunk Campground

Location: Dry Creek Arm near Yorty Creek
Number of Campsites: 12
Campground: Sunny sites located adjacent to a No Wake zone in a secluded part of the lake. Sites 1- 4 are near the lake. Sites 1 - 5 have partial shade while the others are in full sun. A shallow slope at the lake's edge make it good for swimming and wading.

Thumb Campground

Location: Dry Creek Arm near Yorty Creek
Number of Campsites: 10
Campground: Thumb Campground is blessed with a gentle slope and beach along with plenty of shade. The campground is along a No Wake zone. Sites 4 and 5 are close together, while sites 7-10 are about 100 feet from shore. A favorite with anglers, canoeists, and kayakers.

Lake Sonoma Hiking Trails

The trails around Lake Sonoma are usually open to horseback riders, mountain bikers, and hikers. During wet seasons some trails may be closed to bikes and horses.

The South Lake Trail traverses the hillside along the south shore of the Warm Springs Arm.

The Rancheria Trail leads from the Liberty Glen/Madrone Point area up the Warm Springs Arm's north shore.
