Fishing at New Hogan Lake
Fishing at New Hogan Lake is most popular for stripers, especially during the spring and fall months. Other fish caught here include catfish, crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. Trout are no longer planted in the lake, but they can be caught in the Calaveras River. Check the special California Fishing Regulations for the river.
New Hogan is not known for trophy size fish, but in 2006 a 31½-pound striper was taken from the lake by 17-year-old James Puricelli who was visiting from Iowa. The fish was hooked off Deer Point. The previous lake record was 22 pounds.
Where to Fish on New Hogan Lake
Trolling for stripers at New Hogan Lake is popular, but shore fishermen do well also, usually casting from the points from Fiddleneck Day-use area to Coyote Point. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are soften caught around the points, especially where there are structures. Some anglers have reported good luck around the islands.
Catfish are caught during the summer in the shallow areas, especially up the Whiskey and Bear creek arms and all the inlets along the north shore. Crappies are usually caught off the points.
