Lake Tahoe is the centerpiece of the Sierra. Boaters are drawn to its crystal-clear waters and its magnificent beauty. During the summer boaters of all kinds spread across Tahoe's vast expanse. Water sports enthusiasts are found all around the lake. Sailors like the stiff winds. Classic boats such as Chris Crafts, Gar Woods, and Rivas are seen cruising the waters.
Wind is a concern for small craft, especially open fishing boats. When the breeze rises over 10 MPH, most prudent fishermen head for protected water or for shore.

Lake Tahoe Boat Inspections Overview
- Inspections are mandatory for all watercraft being launched into Lake Tahoe.
- Inspections are held at roadside stations only in the summer; during winter months until April 30 inspections are held at public launch ramps.
- Fees for inspection can only be paid by Visa or Mastercard.
- Inspections are needed to keep invasive species such as Zebra and Quagga mussels out of Lake Tahoe.

- Clean, Drain and Dry your watercraft. Drain your bilge, ballast tanks, live wells and any storage compartments. If you have an outdrive, lower the outdrive on the engine to release any residual water.
