Boat Camping on Folsom Lake

Overnight camping in your boat is allowed on Folsom Lake if your boat passes inspection for the following criteria:

  • The boat must have a Coast guard approved, self-contained sanitary unit with a holding tank that has tight and perfect closure at all times. This includes the capturing of gray water.
  • The "head" must provide complete privacy for its user.
  • The boat must have proper sleeping accommodations for all persons on board.

Overnight boaters must register at the Granite Bay entrance station or at the main office building at the Folsom Lake Marina at Brown's Ravine. If the marina office is closed, you may use the Boat Camping Registration Box located at the front door of the marina.

Boat camping is only allowed at the following locations:

  • South Fork of the American River from Deep Ravine to Higgins Point
  • North Fork of the American River from Bear Cove to Mormon Ravine
  • Brown's Ravine inside a rented slip (camping registration still required)

See Folsom Lake Map for these locations.

Except for those staying overnight in a slip at Brown's Ravine, all boaters must observe the following rules while camping overnight on the water.

  1. All boats must remain moored during the hours the park is officially closed.
  2. Boats must be moored outside the main traffic channels and within 200 feet of shore.
  3. Boats may not be tied to shore or pulled up on shore.
  4. Neither camping nor fires are allowed on shore.
  5. Boats must display a proper anchor light in accordance with California's Administrative Code.
  6. Boat camping is limited to a maximum of two consecutive nights.
  7. Vehicles must be registered in the area in which the vehicles are located, e.g. if you register at Granite Bay then you must park at Granite Bay, not somewhere else.
