New Hogan Lake matches great boating and waterskiing with easy access from the Central Valley and a variety of recreational venues. It makes a great family destination for a day trip or for a week of camping.
New Hogan Lake on the Calaveras River is only 27 miles east of Lodi. The lake is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.
New Hogan Lake has plenty of room for all kinds of boating, including water skiing and personal watercraft. The long arm of the Calaveras River as well as numerous side channels provide great places to explore.
There are no marinas at New Hogan Lake. Boats are launched at several ramps at the Fiddleneck Recreation area. The $4 day-use fee there includes launching any number of boats.
Year-round fishing at New Hogan Lake has great fishing for bass, stripers, catfish, and bluegills. Anglers like to cast their lines into the many little coves and inlets around the lake.
Several campgrounds are available at New Hogan Lake. Acorn Campground is open year-round, while Oak Knoll Campground is open from April 1 through September 30. A boat-in campground is located at Deer Flat. Group camping is found at Coyote Point. An equestrian campground is along the horse trail south of the dam.
There is no lodging at New Hogan Lake. The best choices for accommodations are in nearby towns along Highway 49 such as San Andreas and Mokelumne Hill. A couple of nice bed and breakfasts are located in nearby Clements and Lockeford. For motel type lodging go farther west to Lodi.
Lake Camanche rests in the low foothills, surrounded grassy hills dotted with oaks. The eastern end of the lake pushes into higher hills, offering a nice backdrop to the lake. Hillsides around the lake all well shaded by oaks, making appealing places for picnics and walks.
The small town of Valley Springs near the lake has a good variety of stores and restaurants, including a bait and tackle store and popular fast food establishments. To the west are the small communities of Clements and Lockeford. Along Highway 99m about 30 miles to the west, are the cities of Lodi and Stockton. East of New Hogan Lake is San Andreas, the county seat for Calaveras County. There you will find grocery stores and a good selection of services.
