June Lake, CA

June Lake Loop

June Lake is the cornerstone of a series of lakes which make up the June Lake Loop. Known for their excellent fishing and spectacular eastern Sierra beauty, the lakes draw anglers and vacationers from across the West. The largest of the lakes is Grant Lake, followed by June Lake, Silver Lake, and finally Gull Lake.

The June Lake Loop offers something for every interest from wilderness hiking to water skiing, from fine resorts to rustic cabins. Swim at the June Lake beach, fly fish along Rush Creek, or relax at a elegant resort.

Except for Grant Lake, speed limits in the other three lakes in the June Lake Loop are limited to 5 - 10 MPH, which is great for fishing. On Grant Lake, after 10 AM waterskiing, wakeboarding, and personal watercraft are allowed. Afternoon winds often hamper skiers.

For lakes of their sizes, the June Lake Loop has a nice supply of marinas and launch ramps. Boat rentals are available for fishermen and for paddling around the lakes. There are no high speed boats or personal watercraft available to rent. Marinas supply fuel, slips, and even some repairs.

The June Lake Loop is one of the leading fishing destinations in the state. Anglers come seeking trout. The state record brook trout was taken from Silver Lake. A number of early season fishing derbies attract a host of fishermen. Fly fishermen like to work nearby Rush Creek or venture up to nearby back country lakes. Trollers love working June Lake while shore fishing is good just about everywhere.

A number of good National Forest campgrounds are found around the June Lake Loop, along with a couple of private ones. RV Resorts are plentiful. Most of them are within walking distance of at least one of the lakes. Traveling just a short distance to Mammoth or other places, campers will find more National Forest campgrounds, ranging from primitive sites to well established camping areas.

Plentiful lodging is found around the June Lake Loop. Some is higher priced, while others are simple cabins or A-frames. There is something for everyone. In nearby Mammoth Lakes there are several Bed and Breakfasts along with countless condos, cabins, and resorts.

June Lake is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the state. Although Grant Lake is rather stark, the other three are spectacular mountain lakes, surrounded with forest. The rugged eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada rises from the west side of the lakes. Snow capped peaks overlook the June Lake Loop. Carson Peak stands at nearly 11,000 feet.
